Sarah-Jane has nearly 30 years of experience implementing change within organisations and across networks large and small.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

Sarah-Jane is the author of ‘A Different Joy: the Parents’ Guide to Living Better with Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and More…’ and the ‘Different Joy Planner’, international keynote speaker and consultant. She has over 30 years' experience within the voluntary, public and professional services sectors, covering education, Defence, facilities management, finance and construction. She was Programme Manager of the Autism Education Trust for 10 years where she lead groups of stakeholders in the development of training, standards and competencies for professionals working with young autistic people. To date the AET has delivered training to over 195,000 education professionals with over 30 partner organisations.  She has particular strengths in the following areas:

  • Autism and Girls, Mental Health, School Refusal, Absence and Exclusions

    Through personal lived experience and a range of assignments, she has a deep passion for improving the outcomes of autistic and neuro-diverse young people and improving their educational experience through deeper understanding of the latest emerging research and integration into improved practice for schools, families and communities. She is a member of the Autistic Girls Forum hosted by the NAHT and chaired by Professor Barry Carpenter.

  • Making a Difference in Autism and SEND

    She is the author of 'A Different Joy: the Parents' Guide to Living Better with Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and more...' and 'The Different Joy Planner'.  She is a contributor to ‘Girls and Autism: Educational, Family and Personal Perspectives’ Edited by Barry Carpenter, Francesca Happe and Jo Egerton which is published by Routledge; and jointly with her daughter, Elizabeth, in ‘Educating Girls on the Autism Spectrum’ edited by Dr Caroline Bond and Dr. Judith Hebron to be published by Jessica Kingsley in 2019. She has written for Nursery World, SEN Magazine, Network Autism, Charity Finance and ICSA.   She has also written an online training module ‘Introduction to Autism’ for AC Education to support adoptive and foster parents.  through her writing, my work, You Tube channel and newsletter, she works to improve the lives of people with neuro-developmental differences and help those who support them.

  • Working in Partnership

    Developing external relationships with stakeholders (from over 25 organisations, including volunteers) and delivery partners, eliciting contributions that reflect their unique strengths to drive quality and enhance robust deliver.

  • Gathering, Using and Sharing Knowledge

    Using her background in the management and dissemination of information and sharing good practice. A confident conference speaker, she has designed, developed, presented and programme managed the delivery of national and international training programmes to achieve workforce development and systems change in the UK, Italy, Greece and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. She has also worked in China.

  • Fundraising

    Using my expertise in sales and marketing and the management of Key Clients, I consistently secured appropriate funding year on year from the Department for Education including £6.8m over 10 years from two changes of government.

  • Excellent Programme Management

     She managed a range of programmes, systems and working practices to achieve strategic change and consistently deliver developments in time, to cost and at a high quality. She has managed annual budgets in excess of £10M and been directly responsible for over 100 members of staff.

  • Quality Assurance in all aspects of delivery

    She developed Key Performance Indicators including robust delegate evaluation, financial management, quality assurance, training hubs procurement, induction, management and reporting processes to demonstrate quality in every aspect of AET and other project delivery.
